Becoming Vegan: Easy? Hard? It All Depends On How You Approach It.

Original post here - by The Conscious Vegan: http://www.theveganwoman.com/my-biggest-difficulties-in-becoming-vegan-and-how-i-overcame-them/

The four stages of learning

If you are new to veganism, it can be helpful to understand the four stages of learning that apply to learning anything.

1. I’ve just bought my first carton of soya milk.

Wahey! This first stage is known as ‘unconscious incompetence’ – you make the decision to go vegan without realising you know so little about the vegan lifestyle.  This new found decision is often accompanied by feelings of excitement and lots of enthusiasm. You are going to change the world – all by yourself!!

Mastering the vegan lifestyle: you might find yourself reading labels a lot at the first stages of your journey.

You may feel a little (or a lot!) disconnected from non-vegans, but you don’t care. You may start preaching at and/or mocking all non-vegans at this stage too and feel incredibly self-righteous.However, preaching, mocking, self-righteous superiority, and hasty vegan tattoos saying “I hate necrovores” blazoned across your forehead are not obligatory and can be omitted according to taste…

2. I really miss [insert animal-based product here].

This second stage is ‘conscious incompetence’. You realise how little you actually know about the vegan lifestyle and may still crave some non-vegan foods. Yikes!!! You may realise with some sadness that many foods and products that you used to love are not going to be part of your life anymore. You might try some recipes that don’t work out as well as you expected (cue “vegan cake hell”), etc.

Many people feel bad about their mistakes, cravings, and screw-ups, doubt their ability to stick with it and give up at this stage. Trial and error is the most challenging but most important stage of learning. Be kind to yourself. Get plenty of support and education – The Vegan Woman is here to help!

3. I’m finding it alright, actually, this vegan thing.

Congratulations, you are a fully-fledged vegan hero! Your vegan lifestyle is second nature, effortless, and fun!

The next stage is ‘conscious competence’ – you learn how to live a vegan lifestyle, but it still takes some active focus (you find yourself reading labels a lot). You are actively searching for vegan alternatives to your fave things and having successful results (cue “vegan cake heaven”!). You are learning about the ethics and far reaching impact of veganism and making many vegan connections with others. You may well feel a sense of warm and fuzzy love for your fellow vegan buddies, and the urge to slap people who ask you “where you get your protein?” is much easier to control now.

4. I’m a fully-fledged vegan hero!

‘Unconscious competence’ is the last stage. Congratulations, you are a fully-fledged vegan hero! Your vegan lifestyle is second nature, effortless, and fun! You will probably find that your palate completely changes and you no longer crave any of the foods you used to “love”. You know how to seduce omnivores with your delectable vegan delights, you can knowledgably answer questions calmly – most of the time – and you can’t believe you were ever not vegan.

Remember why you are vegan. Veganism is a constant process of education and adventure. Every step we take enables us to learn, grow, and develop in all kinds of unexpected ways. Each one of us saves innocent lives every day, and motivation to change doesn’t get any better than that.

AGENT ORANGE – Monsanto’s Roundup and Birth Defects - Report

People need to realize - effects of chemicals we ingest daily, especially a form of Agent Orange (RoundUp), will not be seen immediately in most cases and instead rear it's ugly head in our offspring and our older age - haven't we learned this from Vietnam? Sad....

I am amazed at the amount of people who really are not aware of the effects of Agent Orange even now.

My father was over in Vietnam - TWICE - and that crap was sprayed constantly.

Even today, children of Vietnam War-era parents and their children over in Vietnam are dealing with health issues, birth defects and more...and they are even finding that issues with children and grandchildren of Vietnam soldiers likely may be linked to exposure and inheritance of Agent Orange exposure from Vietnam War family members.

For instance, my father is in his 60s, but has the veins of a 96 year old man. He's had a major heart attack and a stroke. He's also had muscle and joint deterioration not representative of his age. These are not inherent problems in our family. He's now had the VA determine that his heart, vein, joint and muscle issues are a result of Agent Orange exposure.

FINALLY, some answers.

Additionally, I have near-blind eyesight and I have had this issue since birth. I also recently found out last year that I have a muscle & joint degenerative issue, and I was only 38 at this point - this is something that does not generally happen in women my age at this extent, especially when my Vitamin and Calcium levels are optimal.

We don't have these issues in our family genetically - and it's only recently that doctors have been seriously looking at my and my father's link to the Agent Orange issue.

If you are the offspring of a Vietnam vet, and have health issues that are not normal to your age or family - contact your local VA hospital. You may or may not be eligible to have them sit down with you and perform some tests and research.

(and additionally - going Vegan literally has saved my life in regards to these issues - helping to eliminate my late-onset type 2 diabetes by cleaning out my clogged cells and helping drop the weight, cleaning out my arteries and veins and having my cholesterol drop significantly, and alleviating the muscle and joint pain: my doc was right - animal proteins are not good for the body (maybe not for everyone, but for many), and me kicking them out has proved this for my own body)....

GMO Awareness IS Important, It Should Not Be Taken Lightly.

Below in non-bold type is a section of editorial from Dr. McDougall's website (below) - then afterwards is my response in bold ~ ModifiedVegan

"Current epidemics of obesity, and related diseases, like type-2 diabetes, were on the rise long before the introduction of GMO foods fewer than two decades ago. For example, the rate of obesity in the US has steadily increased from 15% before the 1980s to over 35% currently.  This shift has been accurately attributed to the dramatic increase in the consumption of sugars and oils, as well as, meat and dairy foods, during this time period.

Fear-mongering over GMO foods with inflammatory statements like “It is the most dangerous thing facing human beings in our generation” are distracting the public, and our political attention, away from the most important food-related threat to human health: livestock (chickens, cows, pigs, etc.).

Livestock act as vectors for the transfer of many harmful substances to people. Sensational food scares, such as Mad Cow, foot and mouth, E. Coli, Listeria, and bird flu infections, and dioxin and melamine poisonings, have dominated the news over the past two decades. Important to note is that, in contrast to plant food-based GMO products, all of these (animal-food-delivered) agents have caused real human diseases, albeit only a few cases for each.

Lurking in the background behind sensational headlines, like the elephant in the room, are the epidemics of obesity and illness caused by eating too many animals and insufficient plants. Major medical organizations, including the World Health Organization and the US Burden of Disease Collaborators, have identified consumption of meat and dairy products as the leading cause of illness and death in Western countries. Heart disease and stroke top the list of diet-induced illnesses worldwide.

Cut GMO Production by at Least Half, Now

Switching people from an animal food-centered diet to one based on starches (rice, corn, wheat, potatoes, beans, etc.) would dramatically, and almost overnight, reduce the farming of GMO foods. This shrinkage would be a direct consequence of eliminating animal feed, used to make bacon, beefsteak, and Brie. Worldwide the number one use of GMO foods is to provide feed for livestock! Approximately 80 percent of all corn and 70 percent of soybeans grown in the United States are consumed by cows, pigs, and chickens destined for people’s dinner tables.

With this long-overdue change in people’s diets (from animal-sources to starches), a glut of corn and soybeans would flood world markets and the need for GMO food production would be more than halved. Over the next few months, pastureland could be replaced by farmland, further escalating food safety and accessibility for planet Earth. (Consider that one acre of land will produce 17 times more calories growing potatoes than growing beef cattle.)

There is no denying that the current epidemics of obesity and sickness in Western civilizations are not caused by GMO foods. Our future depends upon us taking actions based upon today’s facts and not upon tomorrow’s fantasies. Efforts refocused off of the GMO distraction and on to reducing livestock production have the potential to save billions of lives from heart disease, diabetes, and cancer—long before the first case of “human GMO disease” is ever reported."

Below is my response to this ~ MV

"We should still be very wary of GMO food items and work to make sure they are eradicated and made to be the inferior choice for consumption - we don't know the inherent danger that they possess & that is the problem. For over 20 years we have watched health decline in this country, and I think it can be directly related to the combination of the huge rise in GMO's, big boom of unhealthy livestock production (factory farming), and overall lack of care for our own health by eating worse, depending on pharmaceuticals over healthy foods, and lack of care for our environment and the life within it.

We are in a society that is heavy on meat and dairy, and it's very unhealthy for our human bodies because the meat and dairy of today is not like it was 20-30-40 years ago. Now, much of it is laden with hormones, pesticides and antibiotics that have no business being in our meat, dairy, fish or eggs for human or even animal consumption.

While I agree that it's a mixture of problems that have brought us to the state we are in now, I don't necessarily agree with everything stated in this section of the editorial from Dr. McDougall's website. I do believe much of the GMO movement is NOT a distraction and GMOs ARE an inherent problem, especially when you mix them with antibiotic-laden factory farming rampant in this country.

I believe both are big problems, but one without the other can still be a huge issue - there have been many many people in many groups that have said simply by cutting out the GMO's from their diet, that their health improved, skin conditions improved, stomach conditions improved, many different things improved physically - and in many of the cases, just by switching to organic foods. They didn't even cut the meat or dairy out of their diet, they just switched to completely organic and many grew their own vegetables as well.

Is this the result of a scientific study with lots and lots of data?  No. This is simply by talking to many different people with many different health problems about their habits and food intake, all who subsequently agreed to adopt a completely organic diet and see what happened over time.

Others I talked to also agreed to go off meat and dairy and adopt a plant-based vegan diet saw even more positive beneficial results.

Myself? I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. I was then told by my doctor to go on a plant-based vegan diet with no nuts, no oils, no high-fat vegetables, and no refined sugars or flours.

I did this and within five months my Type 2 completely disappeared.

Yes, gone.

My A-1C was lower than a normal healthy person's A-1 C. My blood sugars were fantastic, my cholesterol decreased, and my weight started to come off naturally.

No meds. No daily blood sugar testing.

That was over a year ago. Today, I am still living an organic plant-based vegan lifestyle. And I will continue to help educate people on the benefits of diet and lifestyle over pharmaceuticals and costly treatments that do nothing but exacerbate situations.

I honestly believe that kicking the meat and dairy is what saved my life, in addition to going completely organic and as GMO free as possible - it has also helped other elements of my body: my eyesight has improved, my skin, my hair, my fingernails have all improved and my aches and pains have all decreased. And I have not changed my physical fitness level other than instituting a daily walk. I plan to do more, like light yoga or Pilates as soon as my knee pain decreases enough to do the bends.

I honestly believe that all these things work together to cause our health to deteriorate, and the more we can go back to a natural lifestyle - truly natural lifestyle - the healthier this country will become, WITHOUT Big Pharm.

I will continue to fight to get GMO's labeled and to educate society on the dangers of genetically modified organisms. The fact that we have no idea what they will do is even more complicated by the fact that we essentially don't even know how they are made and what the future impact on our bodies and the development of our maturing childrens bodies will be.

Example? BT corn. In order to make this corn, it's inserted with a bacteria and an insecticide so when bugs and insects eat it, their stomach essentially explodes. Now, do you think enough of that eaten by humans is safe? I'm sorry, I wouldn't want to be a guinea pig for that sort of test on my body - nor would I knowingly do it to my children. Essentially, we have no idea what it would do to a developing child whose body still hasn't matured yet. Why have the rates of child gluten allergies skyrocketed in recent years? Why is it that a child can eat a non-organic meal and start to feel inflamed itchiness in their mouth and lips, or have stomach pains...yet then eat that same type of meal another day made only with organic foods and have no reaction?  This needs further research, without bias.

This is why GMO labeling is so important.

These are genetically modified organisms that we are talking about - this does not occur naturally in nature, nor do I feel that nature would want it to occur to begin with. It should be labeled on our foods so we can make our OWN decision on whether we want to ingest them or not, not be FORCED to do so because we "just don't know" that they are in our foods.

You're putting this in a child's body and that body is still maturing and developing - eating genetically modified foods is going to change the make up of their body, no matter what scientists want to say of how safe it should be. There's no "definitive scientific true studies" that can positively say that they are completely 100% safe.  No one can speak for 100% of the world's population because every body is different - we all react differently to different things.

Allergies are another big barometer - allergies develop when the body's histamine responses go haywire with foreign bodies invading our systems. And allergies are skyrocketing all over. To what, you might ask? To anything, and it's random these days. And I honestly feel that messing with nature and genetics has caused a lot of allergies to rise in numbers.

Let's face it, screwing with nature is a really bad idea."

Hormones and GMO in our Food Supply - All Unnecessary

@OrganicLiveFood posted:

@CompleteSkin answered:

It's obvious since girls are starting to go through puberty at 8 and 9 instead of 15 when I was a child.

Hormones and GMO in Our Food Supply

America one of the most advanced and wealthiest nations on earth is also one the sickest nations. But how could that be possible and what has happened along the way that the health of a nation has been comprised for the sake of few corporate elites and profit?

hormone-GMO-food

How come all of a sudden it has become normal to accept the increasing number of chemicals, pesticides, wastes and toxins in our food supplywater and cosmetics? And how did we as a nation started to accept the scam of agribusiness industry to secretly genetically modify our foods or add harmful chemicals and factory wastes to our water and food supply or cosmetics?

Evolution of Hormones in Our Food Supply

Majority of livestock in the states are fed synthetic hormones that can increase the amount of estrogen that we consume in foods. Estrogen is an important hormone for female reproductive system and development of female sexual hormones. Estrogen also helps to control bone growth and cholesterol levels. Too much estrogen has been linked to breast, prostate and endometrial cancer. Humans are exposed to synthetic hormones when they consume animal’s meats that are injected with rBGH or rBST growth hormones. Hormones can increase the chances ofcancer, thyroid disease, diabetesobesityinfertility, asthma and allergies.

hormones-in-dairy-meat

Hormones also find their way into our food supply via crops that are sprayed with pesticides or chemicals. They also exist in form of hormone plastic additives in baby bottles, infant formulas and food packaging. No wonder why we see an epidemic of hormone imbalances in women and young girls.

Somehow girls at the age of 5 or men in their 40s are now growing breast! The recent studies show that young girls at the age of 10 are developing puberty.

Heavy Metals Including Flouride, Arsenic, Chlorine, Mercury in Our Food Supply

You might not be surprised to know that arsenic is constantly added to chicken’s diet by food industry.Fluoride and chlorine are both added to water supply and all farmed fish or even wild fish excluding wild sockeye salmon have high levels of mercury and toxins in them.

Toxic additives including high fructose corn syrup added to almost every processed food contains mercury. Lead, mercury and harmful chemical wastes are even added to cosmetics, sprays and makeup.

Bisphenol A is a toxic chemical used for plastic water or baby bottle and 93% of humans contain BPAendogenously.

Genetically Modified Organisms in Our Food Supply, Many Of Them Secret.

Foods are genetically modified when the genes of one specie is inserted into DNA of another specie. In order to genetically modify foods you need to create non-equilibrium to artificially manipulate, modify or change foods in their cellar levels.  By all means creating a non equilibrium can change and mutate over time. No one has really done any research to find out the endless possible reactions between genetically modify organisms and rBGH growth hormones in our body. The results might not be predictable at the moment and over time can even result in change of bone structure and DNA of human beings.

How Should You Know If You Are Purchasing Pesticide Ridden Foods or GMO?

Purchasing certified organic foods or finding a local farm that applies organic practices is the only way. The good news is that the organic industry has been growing in the last decade and more and more people are becoming aware that the foods that they are eating are making them sick. So why not joining the organic movement today and enjoy a life drug and pain free?

The Most Audacious and Notable Quotes About GMO (Yes, These Were Actually Said).

Still thinking that Genetic Engineering and Biotech is benefiting the world? That theyre out to "save it"? yeah...I smell profit and income, not humanitarianism.

I don't know anyone else but these things said in the media and another publications should really make the world population really take pause...Read On:

"What you are seeing is not just a consolidation of seed companies, it's really a consolidation of the entire food chain" - Robert Fraley, co-president of Monsanto's agricultural sector 1996, in the Farm Journal. Quoted in: Flint J. (1998) Agricultural industry giants moving towards genetic monopolism. Telepolis, Heise.

"People will have Roundup Ready soya whether they like it or not" - Ann Foster, spokesperson for Monsanto in Britian, as quoted in The Nation magazine from article "The Politics of Food" by Maria Margaronis December 27, 1999 issue.

"'It's important for countries around the world to adopt a uniform standard' of acceptable levels of contamination" - Lisa Dry, Biotechnology Industry Association.

"The hope of the industry is that over time the market is so flooded [with GMOs] that there's nothing you can do about it. You just sort of surrender" - Don Westfall, biotech industry consultant and vice-president of Promar International, in the Toronto Star, January 9 2001.

"If you put a label on genetically engineered food you might as well put a skull and crossbones on it." - Norman Braksick, president of Asgrow Seed Co., a subsidiary of Monsanto, quoted in the Kansas City Star, March 7, 1994

"The total acreage devoted to GM crops around the world is expanding. That may be what eventually brings the debate to an end. It's a hell of a thing to say that the way we win is don't give the consumer a choice, but that might be it" - Dale Adolphe, biotech booster and President of the Canadian Seed Growers Association and previous president of the Canola Council of Canada (Western Producer, 4/4/02).

"Maybe we weren't aggressive enough. . . . When you fight a forest fire, sometimes you have to light another fire." - Phil Angell, Communications Director, Monsanto - when asked about a Monsanto advertising campaign in the UK that increased opposition to genetically engineered food.

"Monsanto should not have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food. Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its safety is the F.D.A.'s job" - Phil Angell, Monsanto's director of corporate communications. "Playing God in the Garden" New York Times Magazine, October 25, 1998.

"Ultimately, it is the food producer who is responsible for assuring safety" - FDA, "Statement of Policy: Foods Derived from New Plant Varieties" (GMO Policy), Federal Register, Vol. 57, No. 104 (1992), p. 229

"The thing I'm most proud of is the industry's impeccable environmental and safety record" - Robert Fraley, Monsanto's technology chief

"Stark denials in the face of documented evidence to the contrary have been corporate policy at Monsanto and GE for decades" - Eric Francis, author of Conspiracy of Silence, speaking on the safety of GMO

"For years, these guys said PCBs were safe, too. But there's obviously a corporate culture of deceiving the public" - Mike Casey of the Environmental Working Group

"That is what drives a lot of people crazy. The scope of the fraud, if you will--I know that's a harsh word--the scope of the fraud that's being sold to the American public about this technology is almost unprecedented" - Interview with Dr. Charles Benbrook on GMOs

"Genetically engineered food constitutes a massive experiment on the planet, with potentially devastating effects on human health and the global environment" - Adam Kapp, Columnist for the Penn State Digital Collegian, Nov. 7, 2002.

"I'm not a religious person, but I think there's something just inherently wrong with this-that they can take different species and combine 'em the way they wanna combine 'em" - Phil Geertson, who runs a small seed business in Idaho.

"Genetic Power's the most awesome force the planet's ever seen, but you wield it like a kid who's found his dad's gun.... and before you even knew what you had you patented it and packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunch box, and now you're selling it, you want to sell it" Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park

"I recognized my two selves: a crusading idealist and a cold, granitic believer in the law of the jungle" - Edgar Monsanto Queeny, Monsanto chairman, 1943-63, "The Spirit of Enterprise", 1934.

Juicing Challenge - Days 5-9

Juicing still going strong - but hubby caved, and had to eat something he could chew. ;-)

BUT - The one positive that has come out of this is my husband has now converted to a modified plant-based diet and that means plant-based (aka: vegan) with no oils, no refined flours or sugars. So now it is MUCH easier to cook around here! (Now, if we could just get the child to NOT love cheese and pick fruits and veggies over crackers and cheese sticks...life would be perfect! She is so resistant to anything without flour! We've tried everything to get her interested in fruits and veggies over processed stuff...ugh!)

We are both still juicing, but I am eating fruits and vegetables in addition to my juicing and my husband is now eating some grains, fruits and vegetables ...very simple things.

The important thing to take away from this is that we are not eating any junk food or processed foods anymore, vegan or not...so we are feeling so much better - better moods, better skin, better hair, more energy!!

Next week I start incorporating whole grain quinoa, rice, and other healthy grains back in my diet but in very small quantities - as well as some legumes.

Juicing Challenge - Day 4

Here we are - day 4...we have hit the "I'm-over-this-juicing-thing phase...lol!

But seriously though, we are still faring well.  As of today - we have added in fresh fruit and veggies though to supplement - mainly because our docs recommend it.

And we both need to feel fuller. We are still feeling great, and have noticed great changes in our skin, eyes, hair and even weight. My husband lost 5 pounds already, and I will be weighing in on Sunday to see how I have done. But my clothes are looser, so I think that's a positive sign!

So, keep on juicing...but if you even feel like quitting - DON'T. Just add in fresh fruits and veggies in their natural form and it will help with the hunger and jitters (if you get them)

And, always remember: JUICE AND EAT ORGANIC!

Juice Challenge: Day 3

Day three...what can I say - It's been tough! And the headaches! UGH!

My neighbors were cooking and baking this afternoon, and oh man...did it smell heavenly!

And wouldn't you know it...my doc told me today that I need to incorporate fresh veggies and fruit in whole form as well after 7 days for a couple of days. Basically that means, 7 days juice and smoothie (fruit and veggie ONLY) fast, then two or three days of juices and fruits and veggies, then back to fruit and veggies juices and smoothies for 7 more days. She doesn't want me doing 15 days straight of juices only.

Which, let's be honest - I am NOT broken up over.

Hubby made a YUMMY watermelon, lemon, lime and grapefuit juice today....I could literally live on that! So good!

BUT, we have to incorporate veggies in our juices too, so now it's time to get creative again. They just don't taste as great, honestly.

My skin feels softer, eyesight is a little sharper and my eyes are not nearly as dry on a chronic basis. I don't weigh in until Sunday, so I am anxious to have that day arrive so I can see how well this is going...

Juice On!

Day 2: Juicing Challenge

The title says it all...challenge!

At this point, we have upped our number of juiced glasses we consume (total necessity...otherwise we would be tearing the head off the cat and eating her - and since I'm plant-based, and he's vegetarian...that would really be awful!)

We got creative today, and they all turned out good! What we have discovered however: I have a raging headache and irritability, and my husband has seemingly unending hunger...all part of the 'healing" process, I'm told. (Let's hope so!)

Otherwise, I am feeling "fresh" - meaning I am not feeling groggy and bloated after doing this for two days. My skin is softer and my eyesight is sharper (no joke...I'm not blinking repeatedly to moisten my contacts and trying to focus all the time.)

I have noticed that my Urticaria is still having mild flare-ups though. Strange. Though it is just red spots and not raised itchy bumps...I'll have to talk to the doc about that...

Overall, we are doing ok...if we can get past the intense urge to chew something, we'll be great.

Illuminating True Statement...

Day 1: 15 Day Juicing Challenge.

Well, I started out the morning with warm lemon water to jump start my digestive system - then we juiced some carrot and apples, sat back and drank our breakfast.

So far, so good...

Then about a half hour later it was time for more juice...this time we got creative. That's when the funny stuff started.

So we threw in some dandelion leaves, broccoli stalk, celery, tomatoes, carrots, apple and grapes. All was good until the dandelion leaves went in.

Note to self: NEVER juice dandelion leaves. I don't care if they are juicable and beneficial...they are awful.

But we drank the juice...and have regretted it ever since. I swear there are drug properties in those leaves. I was lightheaded and ill for a good two hours, and then queasy in the tummy. After awhile it went away, so we commenced juicing again - this time with actual recipes.

The recent one is an orange, mango, lime, cucumber and ginger dream! Soooo good!

I started getting tired pretty early in the afternoon...very common, so it's no surprise.

We've learned two things today: hunger is fast and hard, so juice more frequently...and man, this is gonna be rough!

Tuesday I visit my doc to make sure all is going well, and she stressed the possibility that I might have to add in fresh fruit and vegetables in their whole form as well, since I do have health issues, because she wants to make sure I have no emergency issues...test results on Tuesday will determine if I stick it out for the 15 days on juice only. (I'm confident I'll be just fine ;-) )

I did find out though, that many people supplement their juicing with eating fresh whole fruit and veggies WITHOUT cooking or adding to ingredients to them to accomplish their cleanse. Thats it though - no more foods other than that. So healthy! Plus, you get your protein in whole form too from avocados, a little broccoli, kale, etc...Seems like a great way to cover all bases! I was also advised to add a little ( a little! ) organic, non-GMO coconut oil to my carrot juices...helps the liver out when processing, apparently.

So that's day 1!!! Onward and upward...juice on!

Saturday, August 31, 2013

It's Time!! We Kickoff Our 15-Day Juicing Challenge!

The day is here, folks! My husband and I begin our juicing challenge/competition Sunday morning at first light!

I went to New Seasons Market, Costco and Whole Foods to pick up all our fruits and veggies...Wow! My fridge and counter tops look like a farmer's market. It's so encouraging, and makes us that much more determined to win this thing!

No more Clif Bars, Veggie Grill, Whole Foods Deli and Grill...no more eating or eating out at all for at least the next 15 days (and if I'm doing good, I'm extending to 30 days).

Now, to see if the husband can make it the 15 days without hitting that fantastic cafeteria he has at work!

Wish us luck! We will update daily, so keep an eye out for my pearls of wisdom (better known as: good god don't do {this} whatever you do!)

Cheers!

Diet Coke Fights Obesity? Fat Chance

By Katherine Paul and Ronnie Cummins
Organic Consumers Association, August 28, 2013

It was laughable when Coca-Cola launched a campaign to fight obesity. And even more laughable when the king of soda’s anti-obesity campaign shifted all the blame for those extra pounds to lack of exercise and chairs (yes, chairs).

But now, the company that donated
$1.7 million to defeat last year’s GMO labeling initiative in California has gone from laughable to dangerous. In the wake of declining sales of its Diet Coke brand, Coke has rolled out an ad campaign carefully and deceptively crafted to convince consumers that aspartame, the artificial sweetener (whose patent was at one time owned by Monsanto) in Diet Coke, is a “healthy alternative” to sugar.

The
new campaign, being tested in the Atlanta and Chicago markets, takes the form of full-page advertisements disguised as public service announcements. The message? Don’t believe all that bad stuff you’ve heard about aspartame.

Aspartame is perfectly safe. It’s better for you than sugar. Drinking Diet Coke will help you stay thin and healthy.

It’s a sweet story, concocted by the marketing wizards at Coke who are desperate to keep the diet soda money train rolling. But it’s not true. Multiple studies, including
one published in 2010 by the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine have concluded just the opposite. Aspartame, they say, actually contributes to weight gain by stimulating your appetite. Other studies have revealed that aspartame increases carbohydrate cravings and stimulates fat storage and weight gain.

The link between aspartame and increased weight gain is old news. So is the fact that aspartame, far from being a “healthy alternative” to sugar or anything else, has for years been the focus of studies declaring it unequivocally unhealthy, and suggesting that it has no place in our food supply. Aspartame has been linked to
brain cancer and to the accumulation of formaldehyde, known to cause gradual damage to the nervous system, the immune system and to cause irreversible genetic damage at long-term, low-level exposure.

In1995, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA)
documented 92 aspartame-related symptoms, including migraines, memory loss, seizures, obesity, infertility, dizziness, change in seizures, fatigue, neurological problems and a host of others.

Aspartame is not food. It’s
defined as a synthetic compound of two amino acids (l-aspartyl-l-phenylalanine o-methyl ester). The compound was discovered accidentally in 1965, by James M. Schlatter, a chemist at G.D. Searle Company. Schlatter was testing an anti-ulcer drug. When he licked his finger and discovered that his concoction tasted sweet, the market for artificial sweeteners was born.

Is aspartame safe? Not according to multiple studies conducted over decades. And, at one time, not according to the FDA. In 1975, the FDA put a hold on aspartame’s approval, citing deficiencies in the studies conducted by Searle and its contractors. An
analysis of 164 studies of aspartame’s potential impact on human safety found that of the 90 non-industry-sponsored studies, 83 identified one or more problems with aspartame. Of the 74 industry-sponsored studies, all 74 claimed that aspartame was safe.

So how did aspartame get into our food supply? We have Donald Rumsfeld, former U.S. Secretary of Defense to thank. In 1981, Rumsfeld, who had previously served as CEO of Searle,
hand-picked Reagan’s new FDA commissioner, Arthur Hayes Hull, Jr. It was Hull who ultimately gave aspartame the green light.

Here’s how it went down. On January 21, 1981, the day after Ronald Reagan's inauguration, Searle re-applied to the FDA for approval to use aspartame as a sweetener in beverages. Hull, the brand new FDA commissioner, recommended by Rumsfeld, appointed a five-person Scientific Commission to review the board of inquiry's prior decision. (A board of inquiry had been formed in 1975 when the FDA first questioned the validity of Searle’s studies on aspartame). When it became clear that the Scientific Commission was on track to uphold the 1975 ban by a 3-2 decision, Hull installed a sixth member on the commission. That led to a deadlocked vote. Hull then personally cast the tie-breaking vote. Voila. Aspartame was approved.

Hull soon left the FDA and eventually landed at Burston-Marsteller, the PR firm for Searle and for years, Monsanto. In 1985, Monsanto bought Searle and later spun off the company under the name NutraSweet. But not before Rumsfeld earned a handsome $12-million bonus, presumably for his role in greasing the wheels for aspartame’s approval.

In an
article published earlier this year in the New York Times, entitled “The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food,” Michael Moss exposed the junk food industry for employing chemists to concoct additives intended to hook people on the very food that is making us, including our children, not only obese, but chronically ill.

When one of the leading Junk Food Giants says it wants to help fight obesity by selling you more Diet Coke, nothing could be further from the truth. But when it takes that campaign a step farther, by paying newspapers to run full-page ads disguised as scientific articles, that’s deceptive advertising at its worst.

We should be celebrating a 3-percent decline in sales of Diet Coke. And we should be boycotting any product that contains aspartame, a synthetic chemical compound linked to a host of health issues, including obesity, and brought to market under the shadow of dirty politics.

Coke is “testing” its new ad campaign in Chicago and Atlanta.
Let’s tell Coca-Cola’s CEO, Muhtar Kent, and other executives at Coke, that we don’t appreciate their new ad campaign, and we’d like them to pull it immediately. Ads intended to pass for “scientific articles” are an insult to our intelligence and a threat to the health of consumers.

It Happens When You Least Expect It...Kids DO Learn!

So today I am talking to my 8-year-old daughter and she tells me:

"Mom, Nana ordered a Diet Coke at lunch!" ... (I have taught my daughter what is healthy and what is not, and that soda is "basically poison" and she is always chiding my mom when she orders diet sodas.)

So I say, "Ok, so what did you say to her?"

In a matter-of-fact, indignant tone, she said - "'No, Nana! I'm telling mom!' Nana said 'Tell her, I don't care...'. So I called you! Then, the waitress brought it, so I took that Diet Coke right back to the ordering desk and told them to 'Please keep it and please do not poison my Nana - and if she orders one again to please not give it to her, give her water instead'!"

Needless to say, I was laughing so hard I literally cried AND felt a sense of pride in my daughter that is probably insane to most people...And of course, my mother was NOT amused to have that happen in a restaurant. It drives her crazy how health conscious her 8-year-old granddaughter is.

And apparently the people in the restaurant loved it, as did the waitress...my mom just shook her head and sighed.

Ahhh, revenge is truly mine.

I love that kid ;-)

Preparing for The Juicing Challenge!

Well, we have juiced lots of fruits and veggies...and my husband even juiced some horseradish...yes, I said horseradish.

They're not kidding when they say you can juice practically everything! It's crazy!

But, I don't recommend juicing horseradish root. Seriously. We both about burned our eyes out, not to mention our sinuses! That stuff is potent, especially when grinding up and juicing!

So, we are getting an idea of what we will put our money into, and what we will avoid for juicing. Sorry, but radishes and beets are a big no for the hubby...and chard is a big NO for me. Ick...and no matter how we tried it, it was not happening.

So that leaves a ton of other stuff!

And let me tell you, carrots are great. But, go easy on those...everything starts coming out orange after juicing a lot of those! I swear I was actually sweating orange today, among other things! But, never disregard the benefits of juicing carrots. A good carrot and apple juice is fantastic!

I highly recommend a lemon, strawberry and peach juice too! YUM!

We're going to experiment with different stuff for the next couple of days, and when I return from meetings and other no-bathroom-near endeavors: THEN the 15 day challenge begins! (and trust me, for the first week you REALLY want to be near a bathroom at all times!)

Mark those calendars...I start my 15-day Juicing Challenge on Saturday, August 31st! If successful, and I have not killed or maimed anyone, then I will extend it to 30 days. If Joe Cross can do it for 60 days and come out looking and feeling fantastic, then I can certainly do it for 30 days!

Kick-Off For The 15-Day Juicing Challenge!

Ok, folks...my husband and I made a decision start off on this in a smart, economical way. Now many people will tell you you need a nice big fancy machine to do your juicing ... if you're not sure whether juicing is for you or whether you're going to be able to stay with it - I seriously don't recommend looking at a $300, $600, or worse - $2500 juicing machine.

Honestly, your best bet is to start with the Jack LaLanne PowerJuicer option.  And its a good idea to order a couple more blade filters to have on hand in case the one that comes with the machine gets dull from tons and tons of juicing, or gets damaged in any way while cleaning in the dishwasher. (they're only $6.99 + shipping online).

Head to Costco - these juicers are $89.99 at any Cosco nationwide. They're easy to use, easy to clean and work great! We've been juicing a ton of stuff since buying it on Sunday!

These juicers even come with their own juicing book, giving you lots of recipes tips on what to juice and what not to juice ... and how to prepare your vegetables and fruits for juicing. In many cases, you can throw your fruits and veggies right in (after washing, of course!) the way they are - as long as they don't have pits in them or hard shells.

Never - and I mean never - try to juice Coconuts, Avocados, or Bananas. These are "non-juicable" foods...BUT you can juice other stuff and throw bananas in a blender together with the juice and make a GREAT smoothie!

Back to topic: get this juicer - take out the contents of the box and immediately read the brief instruction manual and then read the first section of the juice book. Very informative need-to-know info!

It's a great first step, then if this is something you find that you are going to implement into your daily life - then look towards more expensive stainless steel-constructed juicers if that's your inclination...But give this one a shot first - you'll be glad you did.

Sunday, September 1, 2013 - I start day one of my 15 day juicing challenge! All juice, all day, every day! If I do well, I will extend to 30.

Life Changing. Renewing. A Must See. "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead."

Need a jump start on a lifestyle change? Watch two lives transform, and jump start a change in tons of others' lives at the same time. Your health is in YOUR hands. I'm embarking on a 15 day juicing fast to start off...anyone with me? I will chronicle it all here, and post updates on my Twitter!

Juicing? Remember: NEVER Use Non-Organic Fruits and Veggies!

DO NOT substitute with non-organic fruits and veggies. Juicing non-organic produce is a big fat NO. Why? Because juicing fruits and vegetables grown using pesticides and chemical fertilizers just concentrates those unwanted chemicals in the juice, and can cause you to absorb even more pesticides than you would by simply eating them.

For example, the herbicide Roundup is one of the most toxic substances you can put in your body. Concentrating a chemical like Roundup with a press-type juicer and drinking it is extremely harmful. This really goes for using ANY type of juicer.

Make sure that all produce that passes through your juicer and into your glass is organic, always. This applies not just for seasonal foods - like apples - but for any ingredient that may be out of season or unavailable. If you can’t obtain an organic ingredient, simply leave it out for the time being.

There are NO scenarios where non-organic ingredients can, should or are to be substituted for organic ingredients. NEVER. People who have done this have quickly found it to be detrimental on their path to wellness.

This is especially true of root vegetables - like carrots, for example - which absorb toxins in the soil.

Make the juices without the missing organic ingredients until they become available again.

13 LIES GMO Labeling Opponents Are Recycling In Washington State

13 Lies GMO Labeling Opponents are Recycling in Washington State

  • By Zack Kaldveer
Organic Consumers Association, August 21, 2013
It’s déjà vu all over again. Last year a coalition of out-of-state, multinational biotech, pesticide and junk food corporations spent nearly $46 million to narrowly defeat Proposition 37, California's GMO Labeling Initiative.

Now, the same who’s who of the world’s most notorious global corporate bad actors has descended on Washington State. Why? To try to stop Washington State voters from passing I-522, a citizens’ initiative that, if passed, will require mandatory labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in all food products sold in Washington State.

Like bad robots, they’re spitting out the same old, tired lies, designed to scare voters into voting against their own best interests.

Here are the lies. And the facts. Please read, print, email, roll up and stuff into a bottle you launch into the sea . . . whatever it takes to spread the word that while $46 million may buy a lot of lies, it doesn’t change the facts.

Lie: Labeling genetically engineered foods (GMOs) will cost taxpayers millions of dollars a year.

Truth:
Empirical studies have concluded labeling would lead to no increases in prices. Since the European Union labeled GMOs in the 1990’s, there has been "no resulting increase in grocery costs."

Trader Joe’s, Clif Bar & Co. and Washington’s own PCC Natural Markets all label their non-GMO product lines at no additional cost to consumers.

Lie: I-522 is full of arbitrary special interest exemptions that will just confuse consumers.

Truth:
I-522 requires labeling for the GE foods that are most prevalent in the American diet – food on supermarket shelves. I-522’s exemptions are easy to explain and guided by common sense and the law:

•     Restaurants – Restaurants and bake sales are not required to list the ingredients in their products. Requiring labeling for GMOs would have required tracking all the ingredients in restaurant meals, and since no other laws require that, it didn't make sense for this one to.
•     Meat, cheese, dairy and eggs from animals - These will be labeled if they come from genetically engineered animals. However, they are exempt if the animals ate genetically engineered feed but are not themselves genetically engineered. This exemption is common all around the world. It didn't make sense for Washington’s law to be stricter than international standards.
•     Alcohol – Alcohol labeling is regulated under different laws than food at both the federal and state levels. Because of the single-subject law that requires initiatives to apply to only one subject, alcohol couldn’t be included.

Lie: Consumers don’t need labels to avoid GMOs. All they need to do is buy certified organic products.

Truth:
Food companies routinely and intentionally mislead consumers by labeling products “natural” in order to attract health-conscious consumers. Because the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) does not prohibit the use of the word “natural” on products containing GMOs, most consumers are fooled by this label. According to a recent poll by the Hartman group, 61 percent of respondents erroneously believed that the use of the word “natural” implies or suggests the absence of GMOs, versus 63 percent who correctly believed that the label "organic" means that a product is GMO-free. Food companies should be required, as they are in some 60 other countries, to clearly state that a product contains GMOs. If companies truly believe their GMO ingredients are perfectly safe, why spend millions to keep from having to label them?

Lie: Washington will be the only state in the nation to label GMOs, unfairly hurting farmers and the state’s multi-billion agricultural industry.

Truth:
Washington won’t be the only state labeling GE foods.  Connecticut, Maine and Alaska have passed labeling laws and dozens of other states are considering identical proposals. Besides, 64 countries already require labeling, so many farmers are already used to labeling for exports. In fact, many Washington farmers support labeling because they believe that growing GMO crops destroys healthy soil, and because they sell crops to overseas markets that either require labels on GMO crops, or have banned them completely. These countries are increasingly concerned about U.S. non-GMO crops, such as wheat, that could be potentially contaminated by cross-pollination with GMO crops.

Lie: I-522 encourages shakedown lawsuits by giving trial lawyers an unprecedented new right to sue farmers, food producers and store owners over the wording on food labels.

Truth:
I-522 offers no economic incentives for lawyers to sue. Consumers can't file a class action suit against food producers without first giving the food producer a warning and the opportunity to comply with the law. As long as the defendant fixes the labels, then no class action is permitted. Once the class action option is off the table, a consumer could sue only to get a court order to require labeling, and only for the few dollars that consumer paid to buy the product. Where’s the incentive?

If the state brings a court action to enforce the new law, any penalties recovered by the state go only to the state - not the plaintiff or the lawyer. Food companies are required by law to label for ingredients, calories, etc., and there have been few violations. Why wouldn’t companies accurately label genetically engineered foods, too?

For the real story about abusive lawsuits by rapacious trial lawyers, check out what Monsanto is up to: suing farmers across the country for growing their own seeds.

Lie: Labeling GMOs creates a bureaucratic nightmare for grocers and retailers and requires the state government to monitor labels on thousands of food products in thousands of stores, costing taxpayers millions.

Truth:
Under I-522, the person responsible for labeling processed foods is the person who puts the label on: the manufacturer. Retailers would only have to label the few raw commodities (sweet corn, papaya, squash) that are genetically engineered. They can either stick a simple label on the bin or, if they wish, they can ask their supplier for a sworn statement that the crop is not genetically engineered.

I-522 requires no costly testing for GE ingredients. No burdensome government oversight is necessary. The system is inherently designed to protect small grocers and retailers while providing consumers with the right to know what’s in their food without increasing grocery costs.

Lie: GE foods pose no health safety risks.

Truth:
GMOs have never been proven safe. The FDA requires no pre-market health safety studies, and the only long term peer-reviewed animal study conducted involving GMO corn sprayed with Monsanto’s Round Up herbicide, found massive tumors, organ failure and premature death in rats. In addition, a growing body of peer-reviewed animal studies have linked these foods to allergies, organ toxicity, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune disorders, birth defects, high infant mortality rates, fertility problems, and sterility. Clearly, more independent, long term studies are warranted. Until GMOs are proven unequivocally safe, they should be labeled so consumers can avoid them if they choose.

Lie: GE foods are as, or more, nutritious than organic foods.

Truth:
Organic foods, especially raw or non-processed, contain higher levels of beta carotene, vitamins C, D and E, health-promoting polyphenols, cancer-fighting antioxidants, flavonoids that help ward off heart disease, essential fatty acids, and essential minerals. On average, organic is 25 percent more nutritious in terms of vitamins and minerals than products derived from industrial agriculture. Levels of antioxidants in milk from organic cattle are between 50 percent and 80 percent higher than normal milk. Organic wheat, tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage, onions and lettuce have between 20 percent and 40 percent more nutrients than non-organic foods.

A report released from the non-GMO corn company De Dell, in Canada found GMO Corn has 14 parts-per-million (ppm) of Calcium while non-GMO corn has 6130 ppm, or 437 times more. According to the report, non-GMO corn also has 56 times more magnesium and seven times more manganese than GMO corn.

Lie: The World Health Organization, American Medical Association, National Academy of Sciences and other respected medical and health organizations all conclude that GE foods are safe.

Truth:
The United Nations/World Health Organization food standards group and the American Medical Association have called for mandatory pre-market safety testing of genetically engineered foods, a standard the U.S. fails to meet. A National Academy of Sciences report states that products of genetic engineering technology “carry the potential for introducing unintended compositional changes that may have adverse effects on human health.” Numerous public health and medical groups support the labeling of GE foods, including the American Public Health Association, Washington State Nurses Association, Breast Cancer Action, Allergy Kids Foundation, Autism One, and many others.

Lie: We need GMOs to feed the world.

Truth:
Studies have proven that GE crops do not lead to greater crop yields. In fact, just the opposite is true. A 2009 study by the Union of Concerned Scientists found GMO crops fail to produce higher yields. And a recently released, peer-reviewed study published in the International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability found that conventional plant breeding, not genetic engineering, is responsible for yield increases in major U.S. crops.

Lie: The creation of GE seeds is comparable to the cross-breeding that our ancestors did to create hardier versions of heritage crops.

Truth:
Cross breeding is the product of guided natural reproduction, while GMOs are created in a laboratory using high-tech and sophisticated techniques. One of these techniques involves gene-splicing which is used to cross a virus or a bacteria with a plant. These untested, unnatural creations are the antithesis to what our ancestors did, and what responsible farmers do: cross-pollinate different varieties of the same plant to help naturally bring forth desirable characteristics.

Lie: GE crops reduce the need for pesticides and herbicides.

Truth:
GE crops have dramatically increased the use of herbicides and pesticides. According to a new study by Food and Water Watch, the “total volume of glyphosate applied to the three biggest GE crops — corn, cotton and soybeans — increased 10-fold from 15 million pounds in 1996 to 159 million pounds in 2012” with the overall pesticide use rising by 26 percent from 2001 to 2010.

The report follows another such study by Washington State University research professor Charles Benbrook last year that found that overall pesticide use increased by 404 million pounds, or about 7%, from 1996 and 2011. The use of GE crops are now driving up the volume of toxic herbicides needed each year by about 25 percent.

Lie: GE crops aren’t harmful to the environment.

Truth:
Besides polluting the environment with herbicides and pesticides, GE crops are leading to biodiversity loss and the emergence of “super bugs” and  “super weeds" that are threatening millions of acres of farmland, requiring the need for even more dangerous and toxic herbicides.

GE crops, and the toxic pesticides they are designed to withstand, are endangering numerous critical species, including the honey bee, frogs, birds, fish and the Monarch Butterfly.

And don’t forget our air and water. The island of Molokai in Hawaii has had its air and water quality destroyed by Monsanto’s almost-2000-acre test facility. The same is true worldwide, with many areas around GMO farms reporting horrific bloody skin rashes, an uptick in asthma and toxic pesticides that leach into the groundwater.
